12/31/2009—Safety officer enforces "Semper Vigilans" at Carroll squadron
Civil Air Patrol’s motto is “Semper Vigilans,” which means “always vigilant.” Carroll Composite Squadron in Westminster, Md., gives its members monthly safety briefings to keep members always thinking about what they can do to keep themselves and others safe.
12/27/2009—Howard squadon hosts winter field training
Howard Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol recently hosted two fellow squadrons from Maryland Wing for a winter field training exercise (FTX). Sixteen cadets and seven senior members from Howard Composite Squadron, Fort McHenry Composite Squadron, and Mount Airy Composite Squadron honed their emergency services and search and rescue skills during the first snow of the season.
12/22/2009—Goulet assisted by Reutemann during conference services
The annual Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol Conference held at the Hilton Hotel and Executive Conference Center in Rockville, Md., ended Sunday morning on a quiet and comforting note with worship services led by two former cadets that have gone on to service to both God and country.

In spite of rain and windy conditions, seven members of the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing's Wicomico Composite Squadron recently mustered at the squadron headquarters with full gear to begin an intensive overnight practice and mastering/refreshing of skills needed to qualify as emergency services ground team members.

Seven members from Maryland Wing’s Montgomery Senior Squadron (MSS) recently experienced the fun of soaring as part of the glider orientation flight program at the Frederick Municipal Airport.
11/08/2009—Maryland members assist at Boy Scout orienteering event
Thirty-five Maryland Wing members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) assisted the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America at their annual orienteering event, held this year at Broad Creek Scout Reservation. Approximately 600 Scouts competed in the event, which was also attended by 250 adult leaders.
11/07/2009—Members gather in Rockville for Maryland Wing Conference
More than 200 Civil Air Patrol members from around the state recently gathered together for the annual Maryland Wing Conference and Military Ball. This year’s event was held at the Hilton Hotel and Executive Meeting Center in Rockville, Md.
10/14/2009—Twelve Martin squadron members earn Yeager Award
Twelve officers of the Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron, part of the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing, were recently awarded the Charles E. ‘Chuck' Yeager Aerospace Education Achievement Award in honor of Brig. Gen. Charles E. Yeager, retired US Air Force test pilot who was the first to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947.
10/10/2009—Carroll squadron holds change of command
Capt. Brenda Reed assumed command of Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing’s Carroll Composite Squadron in a traditional ceremony recently held in Westminster, Md. She succeeds Capt. Christopher Folster, who held the position since 2008.
10/04/2009—Cadets soar to new heights at 2009 Maryland Wing Aerospace Academy
This summer, the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing hosted its 13th annual Aerospace Academy at Fort Detrick and Fredrick Municipal Airport, bringing together 42 cadets for a week-long series of engaging aerospace activities, leadership training, and an opportunity to experience powerless flight in a glider.
09/29/2009—Wicomico recognized in county proclamation
The Wicomico County Council recognized the presence of and service to the county and the Lower Eastern Shore of the Wicomico Composite Squadron, a part of the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing. A proclamation noting the 25th anniversary of the squadron’s establishment was presented to the squadron commander 1st Lt. David Argentieri during a recent Council meeting.
09/25/2009—New ground team trained and ready at Towson
Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing’s Towson Composite Squadron recently completed two squadron search and rescue exercises (SAREX) held in central Maryland and providing opportunities for members to practice their emergency services skills.
09/19/2009—2009 Maryland Wing Conference set for Rockville
Civil Air Patrol members from around the state of Maryland are expected to converge on Rockville, Md., for the annual Maryland Wing Conference and Military Ball. This year's event is slated for October 31, 2009, at the Hilton Hotel and Executive Meeting Center, located on Rockville Pike.
09/16/2009—Upper Montgomery marches in Labor Day parade
Civil Air Patrol members from Maryland Wing's Upper Montgomery Composite Squadron (UMC) provided color guard support during the City of Gaithersburg's 71st Annual Labor Day Parade through the streets of Old Towne Gaithersburg, Md.
09/10/2009—Mt Airy cadets take flight
Frederick Municipal Airport was abuzz as 18 cadets from the Mt. Airy Composite Squadron, part of the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing, began to arrive with their families for a day of powered orientation flights (o-flights) in Cessna 182’s.
09/05/2009—Winter named national Cadet Programs Officer of the Year
Maj. Joseph Winter, Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing's Director of Cadet Programs, has been named the 2009 National Cadet Programs Officer of the Year during the Civil Air Patrol National Board Meeting on September 5 in San Antonio, Tx. The award was presented by Maj. Gen. Amy Courter, CAP's National Commander.
09/03/2009—Carroll cadet Anderson earns Mitchell Award
Civil Air Patrol cadet Josh Anderson, a member of Maryland Wing’s Carroll Composite Squadron, was promoted to the grade of cadet second lieutenant after completing the requirements for the Maj. Gen. William “Billy” Mitchell award. The award was presented during a recent ceremony conducted by Group II commander Maj. Bill Parris at the Army National Guard Armory in Westminster, Md.
09/01/2009—Astronaut Tom Jones meets with Martin squadron
NASA astronaut Tom Jones recently gave an evening presentation at the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum entitled “Future Space.” Following the seminar, members from Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron met privately with Dr. Jones for a book-signing event, a question and answer session and light refreshments.
08/26/2009—College Park cadets receive Mitchell Award
Cadets Orville “Bo” Saunders and Anthony Albanese of the College Park Composite Squadron recently received the General Billy Mitchell Award during a ceremony at the Hap Arnold Center, home of the College Park Composite Squadron.
08/21/2009—Upper Montgomery trains youth at Boy Scout camp
Members of the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing's Upper Montgomery County Composite Squadron trained over 200 Cub Scouts about Civil Air Patrol search and rescue activities during the National Capital Cub Scout Camp held at the Isaak Walton Park in Gaithersburg, Md.
08/19/2009—Osprey squadron soars in aerospace education
Maryland Wing’s Osprey Composite Squadron recently received the Aerospace Education Excellence (AEX) Award from Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters. The AEX program requires six hands-on aerospace education sessions along with one field experience.
08/15/2009—National CAP Honor Guard Academy graduates 74 cadets
The 2009 Civil Air Patrol National Honor Guard Academy graduation ceremonies were held on the campus of McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., where 74 cadets representing 29 states from across the country and Alaska completed two weeks of intense training.
08/12/2009—CAP Flight simulator highlight of Dundalk Heritage Festival
Maryland Wing's Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron recently brought their flight simulator to the Heritage Festival in Dundalk, Md. The flight simulator generated great interest and provided a wonderful attraction for recruiting activities along with providing a good platform for informing the community about Civil Air Patrol’s aerospace education programs and search & rescue functions.
08/03/2009—Eight international guests visit Maryland
Maryland was once again a host wing for the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE), an international program where cadets from around the world travel as ambassadors to other countries representing their aviation organizations. Eight guests joined Civil Air Patrol members in Maryland Wing for 11 days, touring the state and getting to know our members.
08/01/2009—Three Martin cadets earn Mitchell Award
Three cadets from the Civil Air Patrol's Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron, part of the Maryland Wing, recently completed the second phase of the Civil Air Patrol cadet program and were awarded the Mitchell Award in honor of Maj. Gen. William "Billy" Mitchell, former Deputy Chief of the U.S. Army Air Service and military aviation visionary.
08/01/2009—Fort McHenry Squadron conducts 16th community blood drive
Mr. Stephen Boehk was the 400th donor in Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing's Fort McHenry Composite Squadron’s Catonsville Community Blood Drive Campaign. The recent drive was the 16th community blood drive held by the squadron. The four year old community service campaign has now exceeded 405 total pints.
07/26/2009—Six cadets solo during Maryland Wing's Solo School
Last week, over the skies of Hagerstown, Md., six Maryland Wing cadets soloed in a Cessna 172 aircraft for the first time. This event was the culmination of their training and study. The cadets, from all around Maryland, participated in the Maryland Wing Solo School, a unique program now in its 19th year.

Maj. Jonathan F. Johnson, CAP, a member of Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing’s Wicomico Composite Squadron, has been recognized for his service during North Dakota’s Red River Valley flooding at a recent ceremony in Grand Forks, ND.

Cadet Lt. Col. Matthew Hughes, a member of Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing's Easton Composite Squadron, recently earned his private pilot license in Easton, Md.
07/12/2009—More than 200 participate in Maryland-Delaware Encampment
More than 200 Civil Air Patrol members from four states and Germany participated in the week long Maryland-Delaware Encampment, held at Camp Fretterd Military Reservation in Reisterstown, Md., during the first week of July.
07/10/2009—Towson squadron promotes CAP at festival
Civil Air Patrol’s Towson Composite Squadron recently joined forces with the Maryland Wing Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) staff and established a recruiting booth at the annual Towsontown Festival.

Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing members joined members from West Virginia, Middle East Region, and National Headquarters at the annual Flag Day Celebration at Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, Md.
07/01/2009—2009 Maryland-Delaware Encampment Underway
The 2009 Maryland-Delaware Encampment is off to a great start. The annual boot-camp like training event at Camp Fretterd teaches new Civil Air Patrol cadets a variety of skills including followership, leadership, self-discipline and teamwork.

Nine Civil Air Patrol members from Maryland Wing’s Carroll Composite Squadron recently participated in a search and rescue exercise (SAREX), part of a series of exercises conducted throughout squadrons in Maryland Wing’s Group 2.
06/15/2009—Secretary of the Air Force visits Maryland, Virginia, and MER drug awareness display
Maryland Wing's Drug Demand Reduction program joined with Virginia and Middle East Region during the Team America Rocketry Challenge held in The Plains, Va. During the event, special guest Michael B. Donley, Secretary of the Air Force, stopped by for a visit and experienced the effects of drugs by using the Fatal Vision Goggles.

For the third consecutive year the Civil Air Patrol’s Wicomico Composite Squadron-Maryland Wing Cadet Rocketry Team was the only CAP finalist among the 100 teams to qualify for the Team America Rocketry Challenge competition.

Mr. David Young, Manager of the Fruitland Wal-Mart Supercenter Store, recently presented a $1,000 Wal-Mart Foundation Grant to the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing’s Wicomico Composite Squadron for support of its cadet aerospace education program.
05/20/2009—Maryland-Delaware Encampment logo contest winner announced
Cadet 1st Lt. Alice Chan of Maryland Wing's Howard Composite Squadron has designed the winning logo for this year's Maryland-Delaware Encampment which will be held June 28 through July 5 at Camp Fretterd Military Reservation in Reisterstown, Md. A contest was held for all CAP members to create the logo that will be used for the event.
05/18/2009—Ells named top NCO at USAF squadron for second consecutive quarter
U.S. Air Force active duty Staff Sgt. Donald Ells of the 70th Intelligence Support Squadron (ISS) based at Fort Meade, Md., has been selected as the ISS’s “Outstanding Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) of the Quarter” for two consecutive quarters, 4th Quarter 2008 and 1st Quarter 2009.

04/26/2009—Harford cadet earns private pilot certificate
A Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing cadet recently earned his private pilot certificate. Cadet Technical Sgt. Thaddeus Halstead, a member of the Harford Composite Squadron, passed his checkride with FAA Designated Pilot Examiner Annabelle Ferra. He has been flying since he was 14 and soloed at CAP’s National Flight Academy in Nebraska.
04/24/2009—New cadet commander at Osprey
A new Civil Air Patrol cadet commander was recently introduced to Maryland Wing's Osprey Composite Squadron located in Middle River, Maryland. Cadet 2nd Lt. James Deering, 16, became the sixth cadet commander of the squadron.
04/23/2009—Upper Montgomery marches in St. Patrick's Day parade
Civil Air Patrol members from Maryland Wing’s Upper Montgomery Composite Squadron marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade last month sponsored by the City of Gaithersburg and the Harp & Shamrock Society.
04/21/2009—BCC begins 3rd year at Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron started its third year as volunteer caretaker for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, where members wash and clean the Memorial and its accompanying statues.
04/17/2009—Wicomico squadron assists in local search
Recently Wicomico Composite Squadron members, part of the Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing, joined 90 volunteers who gathered in Pocomoke City, Md., to search for a local woman who had disappeared in November 2007. The effort, requested by the missing person's family, searched more than 67 acres of fields, woods and swamp.
04/15/2009—New Cadet Commander at the Bowie Composite Squadron
The Bowie Squadron has a new cadet commander. Cadet Maj. Joshua Williams was promoted during a recent ceremony. Williams says his goals for the unit include continued membership growth and expansion of the squadron’s ground team program.
04/13/2009—McManus appointed Wing Administrator
Ms. Sherry McManus has become Maryland Wing's second Wing Administrator, a full-time position at Wing Headquarters. The Wing Administrator is employed by Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters and tasked to assist the Wing with finance, logistics, and other responsibilities as assigned by the Wing Commander.

The Harford Composite Squadron of the Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol recently held a change of command and awards ceremony in which 1st Lt. Tim Rostkowski assumed command from Lt. Col. Eric Tiso. Maj. Bill Parris, Group II Commander, presided over the ceremony at the Bel Air Armory.

Civil Air Patrol members from across Maryland Wing spent a recent weekend training and testing equipment in preparation for the U.S. Air Force evaluated Search and Rescue Exercise later this spring.
04/01/2009—Osprey members active in DDR and community
Members of the Osprey Composite Squadron have been active in community events recently, spreading the word about the Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol. The squadron has participated in parades and worked community events with their CAP and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) displays and activities.
03/26/2009—Col. August "Bill" Schell, CAP National Curator, passes away
Col. August William (Bill) Schell of Aberdeen, Md., passed away at his home on March 23, 2009. Schell served as the National Curator for the Civil Air Patrol, working tirelessly to preserve CAP history. Schell was 79 years old.
03/25/2009—Eight Maryland Wing members selected for international program
Eight Civil Air Patrol members from Maryland Wing have been selected to serve as goodwill ambassadors this summer in the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE). Maryland Wing has the highest selection of members compared to other CAP Wings for this year's IACE program.

03/20/2009—Frederick wins Maryland Wing Color Guard Competition
The Frederick Composite Squadron has won the 2009 Color Guard competition sponsored by the Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol held last weekend in Olney, Md. Four teams from around the state competed for the title and the opportunity represent Maryland Wing at the Middle East Region Cadet Competition.
03/17/2009—Wicomico cadet presented AFA Cadet Award
Recently The Air Force Association awarded its coveted Civil Air Patrol Silver Cadet Medal to Cadet 2nd Lt. Brandon W. Calhoun of the Wicomico Composite Squadron, Group II, Maryland Wing. This medal is annually presented to the most outstanding CAP cadet in a squadron.
03/12/2009—Annual Speak Off held at Maryland Wing
Civil Air Patrol cadets from around the state gave close to 20 speeches at the annual speech competition held by Maryland Wing on March 7. The Maryland Wing Speak-Off was held at Maryland Wing Headquarters in Glen Burnie, Md.
03/09/2009—Osprey cadet awarded Spaatz Award by CAP National Commander
Civil Air Patrol national commander, Maj. Gen. Amy Courter, recently presented the highest cadet award to Cadet Col. Wayne Mowery, Jr., during The Spaatz Association's Winter Dinner at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Crystal City, Va. Mowery, 19, was awarded the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz award #1721.

Civil Air Patrol’s annual Legislative Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, brought more than twenty Maryland Wing members together to speak to their elected officials about the organization, its missions, and its needs.
02/22/2009—Maryland-Delaware Encampment accepts basic applications
Applications for cadet basics to attend the 2009 Maryland-Delaware Encampment are now being accepted. The eight-day encampment will be held June 27-July 4, 2009, at Camp Fretterd Military Reservation in Reisterstown, Md.

Two local cadets, Kathleen Crockett of Frederick, Md., and Matthew Herten of Lusby, Md., are two of 24 cadets nation-wide who have earned admittance to the Civic Leadership Academy, a week-long program in Washington, DC, sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol.

Members of Maryland Wing's Wicomico and Easton Composite Squadrons recently enjoyed an orientation flight from the Salisbury-Ocean City Airport on a C-130 provided by the Delaware Air National Guard.
01/31/2009—Montgomery Senior Squadron leaps into new year
Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol’s Montgomery Senior Squadron (MSS) is off to a fast start for this year with a number of its members earning promotions and aircrew qualifications. During a meeting in the fall, the squadron hosted a change of command ceremony where Maj. Robert Hawkins relinquished command of the squadron to Capt. Michael Regen.
01/29/2009—Brig Gen Walsh presents Eaker Award to Osprey cadet
During a busy drill weekend in January, Brig. Gen. Guy Walsh, commander of the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard, took time out to present the Gen. Ira Eaker Award to Civil Air Patrol Cadet Lt. Col. Wayne Mowery, Jr. The presentation took place at the 175th Wing Headquarters on Warfield Air National Guard Base in Middle River, Md.
01/27/2009—Martin squadron puts "fun" in fundraiser
Cadets and senior officers of Maryland Wing’s Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron recently completed a unique fund raising event by “hosting” an evening at the Perry Hall Friendly’s restaurant. Ten percent of sales from all sit down and carry out orders was donated to the squadron by Friendly’s.
01/25/2009—Maryland Wing members learn basic first aid
Maryland Wing recently held a basic first aid class for its members in Hagerstown, Md. Taught by Technical Sgt. Ira Kest, USAF (Ret.), of the Frederick Composite Squadron, and Capt. Sandra Fox, of the Hagerstown Composite Squadron, members learned the basics of first aid through scenarios set up by the staff.
01/24/2009—Group 1 renews Winter Ball tradition
A flurry of snowflakes and twinkling lights set the stage for Group 1’s Fifth Annual Winter Ball, held at the Mt. Airy Senior and Community Center,where over 50 Civil Air Patrol cadets, officers, and guests enjoyed an evening of swinging to the beat and mingling with peers.
01/24/2009—Maryland Wing Band performs at Inauguration festivities
On January 20, the Maryland Wing Concert Band performed at the Market Square in Alexandria, Va., to celebrate the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack H. Obama. The music support was part of a day of inaugural activities held by the City of Alexandria in the historic Old Town district.

01/20/2009—CAP members see Harrier up close
Members of Maryland Wing’s St. Mary's Composite Squadron recently got to see the only Harrier in private ownership up close in California, Md. The aircraft was made famous when, after a hydraulic failure, it had to do an emergency vertical landing at NAS Patuxent River, Md.
01/17/2009—B-CC Public Affairs ramps up
A select group of officers and cadets from the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron have decided to vigorously study and practice the craft of public affairs. In addition to the basic training learned at the Maryland Wing Public Affairs Academy, these members have elected to avail themselves of television on-camera, on-air, training as well as news and feature writing at Access Montgomery Television.

In recent ceremonies the leadership of the Civil Air Patrol St. Mary’s Composite Squadron changed commanders. Chagne of Command ceremonies for squadron commander and cadet commander were held at the squadron headquarters in St. Mary’s, Md.
01/09/2009—Bowen receives CAP's highest cadet honor
The Mt. Airy Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol's (CAP) Maryland Wing (MDWG) hosted an awards ceremony to honor Cadet Col. Zachary Bowen, age 17, who has completed all four phases of the CAP cadet program, and earned the General Carl A. Spaatz Award, CAP's highest cadet honor.
01/06/2009—Howard squadron hosts NASA astronaut
In celebration of Civil Air Patrol’s birthday, Maryland Wing's Howard Composite Squadron recently hosted a celebration at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics lab. Dr. Donald A. Thomas, former NASA astronaut, and Maj. Hanz Schmitz, Squadron Security Officer, were the guest speakers.
01/03/2009—Martin squadron cadets complete Model Rocketry Program
Six cadets from Maryland Wing’s Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron were recently awarded the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Model Rocketry badge after satisfactorily completing all three stages of the CAP Model Rocketry program.
